Best Weekend RVing Tips for Spring
Spring is finally here and that means its officially camping season!!! Get out your RV, dust off those old maps, and start planning your next weekend road trip. There are a few tips to keep in mind when preparing for your travels.
Preparation is key! Campgrounds can fill up fast on the weekends in the spring, especially because many schools are still in session during the week. To avoid losing out on your favorite camping spot, reserve ahead of time. Reserve America has hundreds of campsites all over the United States that allows you to book your stay weeks, even months in advance. Otherwise, you can call the campground directly for availability.
Pack lightly- you are only going away for a weekend so you don’t need to bring a lot of unnecessary items. Pack a couple outfits and something warm, the nights are still cool in the spring. Also pack for the weather conditions. If it’s supposed to rain the whole time, pack an extra outfit in case you get soaked one of the days. If it’s supposed to be sunny and warm, pack a hat and sunscreen to shield from the UV rays.
Plan your meals ahead of time. This will help cut down on unnecessary eating out and spending extra money. You can make ahead and freeze many meals so all you have to do it heat on the stove or in a dutch oven over the fire. To save money and time you can also plan meals that can cover multiple feedings. What you make for breakfast one day can be saved and reheated for breakfast the next day, and so on. Check out these easy make ahead meal ideas. You also want to plan quick meals and meals you can take with you if you plan on doing any activities away from your campsite. PB and J sandwiches are perfect to take along on a hike; granola bars are also a good snack for a little added energy if it’ll be a while before you get back to your campsite.
Research your activities ahead of time. Planning out your daily activities can help cut down on wasted time trying to figure out what you want to do and where you want to go. Anything that requires or even recommends reservations go ahead book in advance. If there are multiple activities you want to partake in, pick one for each day. This will keep you from getting overwhelmed and stressing about not having enough time to finish your activities before the sun sets. Every once in a while, take a day to RELAX! The best part about RVing is being able to get away for a weekend and spend some quality time enjoying the peace and quiet of the outdoors.
Don’t travel with a full water tank! If your campsite has hookups, fill up just enough to get you there and then fill up the rest of the way at your campsite. This will cut down on the weight of your RV and save you on gas.
In case of an emergency or break down, bring spare tools and parts needed to fix minor issues you may encounter on the road. Jumper cables, tools to change your RV’s tire, chains to pull you out of mud are all good examples of essentials for the road. Plus, most service stations are closed on the weekend so chances of getting anything fixed before you head home are slim.
Most importantly, watch the weather! Keep your weather radios handy and download any one of the weather apps to your smartphone so you get up to date information on the latest weather in your area. You don’t want to get stuck out in the middle of nowhere in a severe thunder and lightning storm or possible flash flooding situation. Weather conditions can turn serious fast so you want to prepare yourself for any conditions that may arise. Check out the top weather apps here.
